Ammonium bifluoride is produced from ammonia and hydrogen fluoride. This colourless salt is a glass-etchant and an intermediate in a once-contemplated route to hydrofluoric acid.


Ammonium bifluoride is used as a glass etchant, sterilizer, and in electroplating and the ceramic and glass industries. It's also used to sterilize food processing equipment, in chemical analysis, and in many other uses.


When added to water, ammonium bifluoride becomes a less aggressive version of hydrofluoric acid. This is why it's very common in truck wash soaps and other cleaning products.
