Ammonia Alum (also called Ammonium Alum) is a type of double salt composed of ammonium sulfate and aluminum sulfate, with the chemical formula:

🧪 Chemical Formula:

NH₄Al(SO₄)₂·12H₂O (Ammonium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate)

🔹 Key Characteristics:
  • Appearance: Colorless, transparent crystals with a glassy or crystalline appearance.

  • Solubility: Soluble in water, forming acidic solutions.

  • Taste: Astringent, slightly acidic.

  • Stability: Stable at room temperature, but slowly loses water of crystallization on exposure to air.

🔹 Uses of Ammonia Alum Crystals:
  1. Water Purification

    • Acts as a coagulant to remove suspended particles by flocculation.

  2. Textile Industry

    • Used in dyeing as a mordant to help fix dyes to fabrics.

  3. Cosmetics & Personal Care

    • Found in some aftershaves and deodorants for its astringent and antibacterial properties.
